Try cleaning the bread crumbs out of it. If you get enough piled up under the latch mechanism, you can't push it down far enough to engage it. These may be avtivated by a thermostat, an optical 'brownness' meter or a timer. Usually the cost of replacing this would be as much as a new toaster due to labour costs, however it may possibly be fixable - could you add a photo of the internal workings - this might help. Unfortunately many other purchasers appear to have similar problems and claim to have had little success with either dealer or manufacturer.
