• Community Events: • (monthly) • • (twice/month) • • •. I started last year with Synthesia, bought piano Marvel, and watched youtube videos. So, I'll tell you what each has done for me. I still consider myself very new to playing piano, I can only play a couple of songs, but I still find everything enjoyable.
Synthesia is good for learning a song through muscle memory, but isn't really useful for learning to really play the piano. This is what I started using at first, and I enjoyed that I could find songs that I wanted to play and at least take a shot at it. It also just builds some dexterity in your hands and gets you used to sitting and just getting into the feeling of what it might be like to actually really play.
Its also FREE! (or really cheap) So, there's that. Piano Marvel is really good for learning to sight read music.
It really helps you to associate the feeling, and the sound of each key, to the note on a grand staff. Also, the scoring system is great and you can really notice your own progression through the lessons. The shortfall is that you will still mostly be playing nursery rhymes and folk songs and it doesn't do a good job of communicating anything involving music theory. Youtube videos my suggestions from what I have found so far: lypur - really old videos, but he's the original youtube piano guy from what I hear. I watched ALL of his videos but I'm not sure how much I actually absorbed from it. Danthecomposer - Improv Jazz musician/teacher. I really like his videos and he has a no-nonsense way of explaining things.
Rhaptapsody (channel name)or Michael New - So far he has the best music theory videos I have ever seen. I've only just now found him and I've learned more in one hour on his channel then I think I have all year. I've never had a piano tutor, which is a big no-no on these boards, and I'm still fairly new so take what I say with a grain of salt. I would try all of the above, and keep trying new things, the only way to fail at learning the piano is to give up, which I don't plan on doing because I'm still really enjoying it.
